As part of the European Capital of Culture 2023, the exhibition CENTURY. idee bauhaus will be on view once again in Veszprém, Hungary in the municipal museum House of Arts.

The backdrop is the personal contact of the collector and initiator of the Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst Soest, Carl-Jürgen Schroth, with the collector László Vass, who himself runs a private museum in Veszprém that is a venue of the House of Arts. Its focus is close to Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst Soest in terms of content. Carl-Jürgen Schroth acquired the original edition of CENTURY in 2020 for his collection. Together with other selected works from his extensive art collection of minimal, conceptual and concrete art, it will be on display in Veszprém from January 20, 2023 through April 2, 2023. Moreover, there will be an exchange with works from the László Vass Collection, which will then be shown in the Schroth Artroom at the Wilhelm Morgner Museum in Soest.

Exhibition of the SCHROTH COLLECTION in Veszprém, Hungary – European Capital of Culture Veszprém-Balaton 2023

The opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture 2023 – Veszprém, Hungary – will take place amidst works of art from the SCHROTH COLLECTION in Soest.

Over 100 works of international and German contemporary art* will travel from Soest to Veszprém in January next year for this special exhibition, where they will be on display on two floors of the baroque Palais‘ Dubniczay.

Veszprém has many things in common with Soest: with around 58,000 inhabitants and a historic town centre rebuilt after the Second World War, the small town is characterised by its liveable ambience and a lively cultural scene. Budapest-based László Vass, for example, runs a museum in Veszprém for his collection of concrete, constructive and minimal art. Both the Hungarian Vass Collection and the Soest-based Schroth Collection are listed in the renowned international BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors.

For years, László Vass and Carl-Jürgen Schroth – collector, founder, benefactor and chairman of the Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst (Conceptual Art Foundation) with their artroom RAUM SCHROTH at the Wilhelm Morgner Museum – have exchanged their catalogues on the collection and exhibitions. Carl-Jürgen Schroth took the occasion of Veszprém’s election as European Capital of Culture to propose an exhibition cooperation between the related art collections – the idea was enthusiastically received in Veszprém and refined in close collaboration.

This German-Hungarian cooperation now provides for a genuine exchange of collections for a limited period of time: While works from the Schroth Collection will be guests at the Palais Dubniczay in Veszprém from 20 January to 2 April 2023, in return works from the Hungarian Vass Collection will be shown at the Museum Wilhelm Morgner with RAUM SCHROTH in Soest from 26 March to 11 June 2023.

In addition to the international positions from the Budapest collection, the focus will be on Hungarian Concrete and Constructivist artists. Hungary had and still has a committed scene of these art movements, which did not receive much attention in the West during the communist era, but which is important today with many renowned representatives. Dóra Maurer and András Gál are just two examples. The artists Viktor Vasarely (†) and Vera Molnar (98), who have been working in France since the 1950s and are both represented in the Schroth Collection, emerged from the Hungarian concrete and constructive tradition.

Im Rahmen der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt 2023 wird die Ausstellung CENTURY. idee bauhaus in Veszprem, Ungarn erneut gezeigt werden. Hintergrund ist der persönliche Kontakt des Sammlers und Initiators der Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst Soest, Carl-Jürgen Schroth, zu dem Sammler László Vass, der in Veszprem ein privates Museum mit inhaltlich nahem Schwerpunkt betreibt. Carl-Jürgen Schroth hat die Originalausgabe von CENTURY 2020 für seine Sammlung erworben. Gemeinsam mit anderen ausgewählten Werken aus seiner umfangreichen Kunstsammlung minimaler, konzeptueller und konkreter Kunst wird sie ab Januar 2023 in Veszprem zu sehen sein. Im weiteren Verlauf findet ein Austausch mit Werken der Sammlung László Vass statt, die dann im Raum Schroth im Museum Wilhelm Morgner in Soest gezeigt werden.

Ausstellung der SAMMLUNG SCHROTH in Veszprém, Ungarn – Europäische Kulturhauptstadt Veszprém-Balaton 2023

Die feierliche Eröffnung der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt 2023 – Veszprém, Ungarn – wird inmitten von Kunstwerken aus der Soester SAMMLUNG SCHROTH stattfinden.

Über 100 Werke internationaler und deutscher Gegenwartskunst* reisen im Januar nächsten Jahres für diese besondere Ausstellung von Soest nach Veszprém, wo sie auf zwei Etagen des barocken Palais‘ Dubniczay zu sehen sein werden.

Veszprém hat manches mit Soest gemeinsam: mit rund 58.000 Einwohnern und einem nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wieder aufgebauten historischen Stadtkern zeichnet sich die Kleinstadt durch ihr lebenswertes Ambiente und eine lebendige kulturelle Szene aus. So betreibt der in Budapest ansässige László Vass in Veszprém ein Museum für seine Sammlung konkreter, konstruktiver und minimaler Kunst. Sowohl die ungarische Sammlung Vass als auch die Soester Sammlung Schroth sind im renommierten internationalen BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors aufgeführt.

Seit Jahren tauschen László Vass und Carl-Jürgen Schroth – Gründer, Stifter und Vorsitzender der Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst mit RAUM SCHROTH im Museum Wilhelm Morgner – ihre Sammlungs- und Ausstellungskataloge aus. Die Kür Veszpréms zur Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt nahm der Soester Sammler Carl-Jürgen Schroth zum Anlass, eine Ausstellungskooperation der artverwandten Kunstsammlungen vorzuschlagen – die Idee wurde in Veszprém begeistert aufgenommen und in enger Zusammenarbeit ausgefeilt.

So sieht diese deutsch-ungarische Kooperation nun einen echten Sammlungstausch auf Zeit vor: Während Werke aus der Sammlung Schroth vom 20. Januar bis 2. April 2023 im Palais Dubniczay in Veszprém zu Gast sind, werden im Gegenzug vom 26. März bis 11. Juni 2023 Arbeiten aus der ungarischen Sammlung Vass im Museum Wilhelm Morgner mit RAUM SCHROTH in Soest gezeigt.

Neben den internationalen Positionen aus der Budapester Sammlung wird der Fokus auf den ungarischen Konkreten und Konstruktivisten liegen. Ungarn hatte und hat eine engagierte Szene dieser Kunstrichtungen, die zu Zeiten des Kommunismus nicht viel Aufmerksamkeit im Westen erfuhr, mit vielen namhaften Vertreter*innen aber heute bedeutend ist. Dóra Maurer oder András Gál seien nur beispielhaft erwähnt. Die seit den 50er Jahren in Frankreich arbeitenden Künstler Victor Vasarely (†) und Vera Molnar (98), beide auch in der SAMMLUNG SCHROTH vertreten, stammen aus der ungarischen konkreten und konstruktiven Tradition.
