CENTURY. idee bauhaus im Museum Wilhelm Morgner, Soest

Ausstellung vom 25. Juni bis 27. August 2023 – Eröffnung am Samstag, 24. Juni 2023

Six new entries: 2023 + [HU]

In the context of the exhibition in Veszprém, an idea was set to live that had already been part of the original 2019 concept: As the exhibition was meant to travel, it was intended to invite artists from the region, local area or even nation the respective venue would be located. Contacts to all continents had already been made, from Beijing/China through Rabat/Morocco, Melboure/Australia and Montevideo/Urugay. However, the Covid-19-Pandemic forced the complete cancellation of these plans.

The more, it was a real pleasure to be able and invite 24 Hungarian artists to make proposals for additional contributions to the 2023 exhibition. As a consequence, the organisers – SAMMLUNG SCHROTH, House of Arts, Veszprém and drj art projects, then had to make hard a choice to finally select six works for the extension of the CENTURY-project.

The new entries are to be seen here [ordered alphabetically by first name, as the complete project is]:

István Halmi-Horváth [*1973 · HU]. Colour Structure A4/1, 2023.

Colour Structure A4/1, 2023. Acrylic Painting on Paper, 29,7 x 21 cm.

With the mapping, optical properties of the juxtaposed lines and stripes, I strive to represent reality and illusion together. My intention in this work was to show light and darkness, spatial depth, through different degrees of a colour, leaving free its philosophical, spiritual, scientific approaches. My aim is to show ambivalences, not to make statements, but to raise questions about the nature of the reality we experience, its receptivity.

Julia Nema [*1973 · HU]. 21, 2023.

Series of unique works. All 2023, 29,7 x 21 cm.

A4 format is our most frequently used standard paper size. It is so ordinary that it is exciting. In recent years, I have made exclusive use of this format for a number of reliefs and collages, working with my own mix of paper and porcelain. This process serves me as a framework of both vision and haptics to elaborate on the conditions, dimensions and relations of white.
For CENTURY. idee bauhaus project, I chose to use blank paper only and created a set of A4 size paper works, each composed of two entire A4 format sheets, by folding, cutting and overlapping them. Each work includes, hides or reveals a square shape of 21×21 cm. The qualities of selected paper stocks range from soft to hard, thick to thin, solid to translucent, warm tone to cold.
This limited set of rules, however, opens up a wide range of possibilities where the difference between plane and space is dissolved. Through the interaction of tactile qualities and elusive color fields, the relativity of whiteness is awakened. Transparency makes a home for visibility and existence.
In this body of paper works entitled „21“, I evoke two Bauhaus Masters I admire the most – László Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers.

CENTURY @ House of Arts Veszprém [HU]

Third time on display January 20 through April 2, 2023, at Palais Dubniczay in Veszprém, Hungary

___EN___
As part of the European Capital of Culture 2023, the exhibition CENTURY. idee bauhaus will be on view once again in Veszprém, Hungary in the municipal museum House of Arts.

The backdrop is the personal contact of the collector and initiator of the Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst Soest, Carl-Jürgen Schroth, with the collector László Vass, who himself runs a private museum in Veszprém that is a venue of the House of Arts. Its focus is close to Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst Soest in terms of content. Carl-Jürgen Schroth acquired the original edition of CENTURY in 2020 for his collection. Together with other selected works from his extensive art collection of minimal, conceptual and concrete art, it will be on display in Veszprém from January 20, 2023 through April 2, 2023. Moreover, there will be an exchange with works from the László Vass Collection, which will then be shown in the Schroth Artroom at the Wilhelm Morgner Museum in Soest.

C E N T U R Y. idee bauhaus

100 perspectives on 100 years of the Bauhaus — 100 international artists reflect their personal attitude on the idee bauhaus

Anyone who works in the fields of art, architecture, or design has inevitably engaged with the Bauhaus at some point, and in most cases, has developed a position on it.

As a programme and project gallery for conceptual and minimal contemporary art + architecture, drj initiated a project of its own to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’ founding which will be shown as a special exhibition at the POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair during Berlin Art Week.

100 international artists were invited to submit their personal reflections on the Bauhaus in the form of a DIN A4 sheet of paper. These individual contributions have been brought together in the exhibition CENTURY. idee bauhaus, which illuminates a broad spectrum of artistic approaches and attitudes, encompassing both personal closeness and critical distance to the subject.

The exhibition is an exemplary visual answer to the question of whether [and if so, how] the legacy of the Bauhaus, which itself existed for only fourteen years, can still be recognized in contemporary artistic approaches.
Or is it perhaps more the decades of reception history that were formative— whether continuing and adapting Bauhaus ideas or rejecting them?

The exhibition is an official contribution to the jubilee programme and was shown for the first time in the drj exhibition rooms in Berlin-Schöneberg from April to June 2019.

CENTURY. idee bauhaus – a drj project with 100 international artists

First edition on display from April 28 through June 23, 2019, at drj art projects, Berlin

Anyone who works in the fields of art, architecture, or design has inevitably engaged with the Bauhaus at some point, and in most cases, has developed a position on it.

As a programme and project gallery for conceptual and minimal contemporary art + architecture, drj initiated a project of its own to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’ founding, forming a curatorial team and inviting 100 international artists to submit their personal reflections on the Bauhaus in the form of a DIN A4 sheet of paper.

Or is it perhaps more the decades of reception history that were formative—whether continuing and adapting Bauhaus ideas or rejecting them? The curatorial team consists of museum director Simone Schimpf, MKK Ingolstadt, curator Sibylle Hoiman, Bauhaus Archiv Berlin, art scientist Frederik Schikowski, Berlin/Basel and architect and art collector Frank F. Drewes, Berlin/ Bielefeld, as well as drj directors Christiane Bail and Matthias Seidel.

An overview of all 100 works is available as downloadable pdf file: CENTURY_A1_Poster__A4_Folder_.pdf
